National brought back the Webelos Colors about 4 years ago. They were only
out for one year because of the major outcry of Cubs, Leaders and Parents.
What brought it on was National encouraging the Webelos Dens to adopt a
patrol name and wear a patrol patch. If you wear the colors properly, it will
cover the area the patrol patch would be in (The old colors used to have a
Den Numeral they would pin on the top strand.) So if you are wearing a patrol
patch, you have no place to put the pins. If you check the Webelos hats, you
will see an extra flap inside the cloth front. This is to protect the heads
from the metal clasps (and a little from those pins who are missing clasps).
The Cubs complained that they had waited and sometimes coveted those colors
as sign of being one of the "Big Kids". Although many Webelos Scouts lose
their colors, parents complained that it was easier to lose hats, and or the
pins off the hats, than to lose them off the colors. Leaders agreed with both
(especially since most were parents!). We allow the packs to decide which way
they want to go.
As for Den Name, by all means encourage the boys to decide on a Den Name,
even if you don't wear the patch. Then you can make a Den Flag and Den Cheer.
Of course you should have them anyway, but they would mean a little more.
