I have read most of the recent postings on this and for what it is
worth I have a few points to make.
Someone has already commented on being clear about what the first aid
kit is for, and who will need it. In a Patrol first Aid kit, I believe
you should only have very basic first aid items like bandages,
dressings etc. I include sunblock in my Patrols kits, but not insect
repellant (insects are not a real problem arounf here anyway). I DO
NOT include any medications or burn creams etc.
I suggest each Scout also have their own personal first aid kit, and
if they want to include their own medications, that's OK for over-the
From my first aid training, no first aid kit should contain a
tornequet. The current treatment taught here is a broad pressure
bandage, and I have been told a tornequet can do more damage than good
in many circumstances.
