In response to a message I received, here's a little more information:
> Spreading unsubstantiated rumors, accusations, and panic about viruses
> is almost as bad as spreading the virus itself.
>What is the source of your rumor?
Source: EDS Technical Bulletin 2.07 (July 1995)
> Has it happened to you personally.
No, but I trust the source and as a friendly gesture, I wanted to give a heads
up to all of my brothers & sisters in Scouting.
> How do you know ALL the AOL disks are infected?
I never said ALL, the key wording was MAY:
A destructive virus called "BUPT" may be included on the disk along with
standard files. This virus is also known as "Traveller", "WelcomB", and
> Since they send out thousands, which ones (which version of AOL)
I am not sure, the bulletin referred only to:
"America On-Line (AOL) recently mailed free month-long subscription trial disks
to the world."
> Why does only the latest McAfee pgm clear it (not Norton, etc)?
McAfee is not the only program, but the suggested program in the bulletin
mentioned above. I would assume that it has already successfully detected and
cleaned the virus from a few computer systems already. I can not say for sure
that any other programs can or cannot detect/clean the virus in question, so I
did not mention any of the other programs. Also, I did not say that McAfee was
the only program, I simply stated:
"This virus can be removed with the latest version of McAfee Virus software."
Hopefully this will clear up a few questions. My goal was not to "flame" on
AOL or throw everyone into a wild panic and have an electronic stampede, but to
help others ... which is part of the Spirit of Scouting! I know that whenever
someone knows of a potential source of a virus, I would hope that they would
share this information with others ... so that we don't get infected (Do unto
others as you would have them do unto you).
