Terry Slade remembered with some nostalgia some incidents of his
initiation involving eating "sheep eyes", "monkey brains" and "branding"
with an ice cube. He remembers this fondly and does not consider this
My goodness! And what would we consider to be 'hazing'? Are we aware,
for example, that because we don't have separate cold and heat receptors,
that the body cannot distinguish between fire and ice, literally? And
that this discrepancy is used to gruesome advantage by torturers? [Of
course, ten minutes later the cold sensation is gone, but the fire burn
I hope I am not the first, or the only one to say this, but: The Emperor
Has No Clothes!
Let us not equate survival and relief with nostalgia. Please.
