greetings to all!
how do you keep a group of 8 and 9 year-olds from getting too rowdy during
den meetings? one idea is the use of what i call a *good manners candle*.
rules are as follows:
1. before our opening ceremony, our candle is lit (usually an ordinary
10-12" taper). this candle (hopefully) stays lit for the duration of the
2. as long as the candle is lit, the scouts are to use good manners *at all
times*, which includes not yelling, pushing, shoving and all other kinds of
3. if the boys forget their manners and become too rowdy, the candle is
4. when the candle is burned away, the boys earn a prize (i didn't tell my
scouts what it was -- i let it be a surprise).
WARNING!! i don't guarantee that this will work for every den, but it worked
for me, so i thought i'd pass it on.
