You would want your Den Chiefs to be at least First Class rank. In a well
seasoned troop, with new Scouts getting through to First Class by the time
7th grade starts, 7th grade is an ideal year to be a Den Chief, IMO. It's
still early for the Scout to be elected a patrol leader, but he needs the
position of responsibility for his Star rank. In our town, 7th grade is
the second year of middle school, so a 7th grader has gotten over the hump
of a new school, as well. Since I run Den Chief training in addition to a
troop, I find I'm placing Den Chiefs all over town. Older Scouts can work
well, too of course, but I wouldn't want a first year Scout to do it.
What do others think?
