I read Vince's problems with some sense of familiarity. I took over a
Scout Troop with about 5 Scouts, and over three years built it up to
almost 30. Now we are back to about 18, with almost half due to leave
within 10 months.
First, if you run a good program, the members will come in time. The
Second, it is natural for groups to go through cycles. One book I read
tolked about groups "forming, storming, norming, performing and
mourning". The norming meansgetting the rules straight, but the rest I
think are pretty self evident. The trick is to keep the group at the
performing stage, but this cannot be done without constantly starting
up new things to get the enthusiasm of the forming stage.
So forget about what has been and start thinking about what could be
or even better what will be in the future!
