I've been working over the problem of backpacking, stoves and younger
scouts for several years (all this in background mode, not taking up much
CPU time). Not only am I concerned about the safety of white gas, the extraz
weight of propane/butane stoves, their effectiveness in cold weather, but also
the problem of buying another stove when they get responsible enough to use
white gas (had I my ruthers, someone would build a propane/butane stove that
could be upgraded to white gas and not an unreasonable cost).
So I'm reading rec.backcountry for recipies and the light comes on!
Here's a section on cooking-less recipies! Hey, two birs with one stone and
all that - I can reduce my pack weight by leaving stove/fuel home, and
can solve the young scouts problem also! of course, they'll never buy it...
gotta have it.....
