Regarding Mike Brophy's Philmont map info request:
There are a couple of sources of Phil maps.
The best source is the Philmont Trading Post. They can send
you a catalog for all their stuff, including maps. They now have a
couple of choices. For years the only Phil map available was a
1:62,500 map produced by the Ranch (80' contours). There were also
the 15' quadrangles available from the United States Geological
In the past five years or so the USGS has produced 7.5' quads
of the area (1:24,000 scale, 40' contours). I believe Philmont used
these as a basis for a new set of maps because they now sell a set of
3 larger scale maps of the North, Central and South portions of

So your choices seem to be: order from Philmont or get the
USGS New Mexico index and figure out the 1:24,000 map coverage.
