I am second year den leader for Pack 98 in Derry, NH. I was den leader for the
Wolves den last year and will be wolves den leader again this year. Our pack is
on the small side. We have about 40 boys. There is 1 wolf den, 1 bear den and a
webelos den. We also have a tiger cub program.
I am looking for a place (museum or historic site) for our pack to visit for an
overnight stay. It should be within about 4 hrs driving time from Boston.
Last year, We went to Battleship Cove in Fall River, Mass. The battleship USS
Massachusetts is moored there. The boys get to sleep over on the battleship.
You arrive on Saturday afternoon and are assigned bunk space. At about 6 pm,
dinner starts, dinner is served in the mess hall of the ship. After dinner
there is a presentation about the ship and its history (Interesting fact:
Through all its battles, no one was killed on the USS Mass.). After dinner, the
boys are free to explore the ship. About half of the ship is open to explore.
They can go from the engine room to the gun turrets. Lights out is at ten, we
had the boys asleep by about midnight. Revelry is at 6:30 am and then breakfast
is served. The boys get a bag lunch and can explore the rest of the ship. There
is also the destroyer, USS Joseph Kennedy, some PT boats and a submarine. Down
the street is the Fall River Maritime Museum.
We have been told about an overnight at Mystic Seaport in Conn. but the minimum
age is 12 so that eliminates most of the boys.
Does anyone know of anyplace similar to Battleship Cove for an overnight trip?
