Camp Frank Rand, in the Great Southwest Council, is located just north of
Santa Fe, New Mexico at the foot of the Sangre De Christo Mountains. (This is
about 60 miles southwest of Philmont).
In addition to the traditional summer camp program, we offer a wilderness trek
into the Pecos Wilderness. This trek can be done by patrol sized groups or
on a provisional basis. Generally, the younger scouts remain in camp doing
the summer camp program, and the older scouts go out on the trek.
Our trek offers the same beautiful scenery, elevation, and challenge that
Philmont does, in the same mountain range, however our trek is a TOTAL
wilderness experience. There are no program stops along the trail, and you
may go for the entire 5 days without seeing another person.
We are going to promote this activity heavily this year, so get your information
early. For information, contact The Great Southwest Council, 5841 Office
Blvd., NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109. (505-345-8603).
One other thing. We often have units split their unit between Philmont and
Camp Frank Rand. The older members can go on the Philmont Trek, while the
younger scouts can participate in the traditional summer camp program at
Camp Frank Rand. Both get the benefit of the travel, and both have a
beneficial Scouting experience here in New Mexico.
