I think Susan has an excellent response. A major factor is the purpose of
the school's requirement. Some time ago we had a discussion in relation to
church-related activities, i.e., serving as an altar boy, etc.
The guideline I like to use is that the service is beyond a "requirement" of
the organization. I would not give credit for "cleaning erasers" for an
individual class but I might if the project were an extra the scout did for
multiple class rooms.
Regardless of what a unit chooses to accept (and it is up to the unit), the
scout should obtain prior approval.
Now for the patch question!! Would you give credit for service a scout did
as part of detention?
