re: checking out applicants before approving their application.
The lawyer folks in the listserv can correct me, but it was my understanding
that, at least in Massachusetts, if we get the applicant to sign a statement
authorizing us to obtain a copy of his Board of Probation Report (i.e. any
misdeneanors/felonies/Restraining Orders), we can give the statement to the
local police department, and they will print a copy for you.
I work in a law enforcement agency, and this is what one of our communication
dispatchers explained to me. That doesn't necessarily make it true though.
We have never had an occasion to implement something like this. I hope to
clarifiy the legal aspects of it, and if it is OK, possibly implement it when
I start to create the troop MB counselor list this fall.
It is truly sad when you have to do an exhaustive background check like this,
but as another member of the listserv said, I would have a hard time dealing
with the thought that I approved a counselor that later victimzed one of our
