Our District Advancement Chairman (she's also our Troop Advancement
Chairman) maintains a current MB Counselor List. Printed copies are
available at our Council Office. She updates the printed list twice a year,
every July and January. Each MB is listed alphabetically, followed by the
"approved" MB Counselor(s), Home Address (unless they don't want it listed),
Home Telephone Number, Work Telephone Number.
The SM and ASM's in our Troop keep a copy for the Scouts to refer to when we
give them the blue MB card to fill out, and let them choose who they want to
go to as a Counselor. From the new July published MB Counselor List, I've
just compiled our own list for our SM and ASM's to also use, and found that
we have "approved" MB Counselors within our own Troop for 45 merit badges.
(It even suprised a few of us!)
Our District Advancement Chairman returned from Philmont with a copy of BSA
National's new one page handout (front and back) that contains MB Counselor
Guidelines. She's going to send the new handout to each of the listed MB
Counselors and send a card for them to sign, indicating that they have read
the MB Counselor guidelines and agree to follow them. She'll do the same for
each new MB Counselor that registers in the interim. If the MB Counselor
does not sign and return the card, she'll drop them from the "approved" list.
During the MB Counselor registration process, she also requires in addition
to adult registration form being completed, that another form be completed
indicating their qualifications for the MB('s) and references. She contacts
the references, before putting them on the "approved" list. This seems to
help keep the problems to a minimum.
SM's and ASM's are allowed as counselors for Camping, Cooking, and Hiking
MB's. Parents are allowed as counselors only for the Home Repairs MB.
The Council Office refers questions and problems with MB Counselors to the
District Advancement Chairman. This helps the DA Chairman stay on top of
problems and hopefully avoid problems in advance by answering the questions
as they come up.
Off to Woodbadge for a week!!!
