Philmont/Polarpure and Valle Vidal

Our crew just returned from Philmont last week and had a blast.
We were able to hike in the Valle Vidal National Forest and even made it over
the Tooth. I recommend the Valle to any groups who want to enjoy primitive
camping, Philmont programs and the chance to go off trail, especially because
there aren't any.
My biggest concern during the trip was how we purified our water. We used
Polarpure bottles. Basically, there are iodine crystals in the bottom of a
bottle. You add water to dilute them and use this water to purify your
I was wondering how you know when the bottles are used up, especially when
our bottles came from a previous crew and there is probablly a crew after
ours using them. I have used iodine "tablets" and water filters extensively.
Does anyone know the background of this product and whether it is worth using
again, and make me feel better if I have to.
