I am the scoutmaster of Troop 751 in Glen Allen (near Richmond)
Virginia. We have a smallish troop of 23 registered, 18-19 active
boys ranging in age from 11-17. I moved up from ASM (of 1 month) to
SM about 14 months ago when the previous scoutmaster resigned. We are
chartered by a local church which has pretty much kept a "hands-off"
attitude for the troop's 34 years. That is, they provide us with a
place to meet; other than that, we're on our own. (Yes, I'm working
on getting them more involved!)
The troop has a number of challenges (probably no more than any other
troop), particularly getting new members to work on rank advancement
and older members to participate in the SCOUTING activities at scout
camp, camporees and campouts. (They'd much rather sit around and play
cards or talk rather than work on rank advancement or scoutcraft).
The concept of the PATROL METHOD is also hard for them to understand.
Over the past year we did improve our planning process; however,
motivating the boys is still difficult. The junior leaders are great
at planning; they're still struggling with carry-through. Some recent
postings about STANDARDS for junior leaders may be helpful to us. We
also have difficulty in recruiting adults for committee positions.
CLIP ART: I've noticed some folks looking for color scouting clip art;
I'd also be interested in locations where b/w clip art is available.
CHIGGERS: There's also been a lot of talk about chiggers. My World
Book says that chiggers burrow down the hair follicles (isn't nature
lovely? :-) ). I've found that a good treatment for the itch is a gel
made by Benedril. It also works on poison ivy, etc.. You simply rub it
on the affected area and it stops the itch for a few hours. It's
available over the counter at your local pharmacist.
I've learned a lot already from this forum -- keep it up!
("an hour a DAY," maybe?)
