Now, matchless fires?

Hi, yes it's Rick again, looking for more free words of wisdom from all of you,
my scouting gurus on the net.
Also, for wilderness survival, matchless fires. We're looking for something
different than the usual. (BTW, a scout asked me if lighters counted for
matchless fires... ideas?) For flint and steel, do you have to buy a kit, or
are there flint rocks or equivalent that you find on outings?
Anybody know how to do the steel wool and flashlight trick? Can't remember the
details (any of them...).
What do you use to collect the sparks, etc. from the different methods? When
I lived down in Gulf Coast Council (So. TX) we used shredded cedar bark, which
worked incredible well. But haven't seen many cedars here in Iowa.
Anyway, all you ideas are greatly appreciated. I enjoy this server for all the
ideas and support. Thanks.
