One of the things that our troop has done with great success is to take them
on a surprise survival trip. The boys' packs and troop camping equipment is
placed in a car (which never leaves the city) and the scouts were told that
we're going to do a 5 mile hike with just their day packs in the back country
of PA and the troop gear will be waiting for them at the campsite. Late in
the afternoon we announce that we're lost, tired, and best that we spend the
night and find our way out in the morning. Scouts are forced to build make
shift shelters and stay warm and dry with only those items in their day
pack.It's very important that the adult leaders not have more equipement or
comforts than the scouts.
