Last week I spent a week of my vacation at Pine Hill
Scout Camp in Berlin, NJ. A most interesting week
I must say.
I arrived at camp to be greeted with some of the boys and
parents at the sign in table. I thought it was strange that
I was asked what Den I was in, but continued alomg with the
I asked what this den thing was and was told that two sites
were being used for the campers. I told them that I brought
14 boys from my camp and that I wanted them to be together.
I was assured that they would be. I was also told that
there would be other boys in the site as well, along with
4 or 5 other adults. OK for now. PS - it was HOT TOO!!!!
Got to the site and saw lots of tents, 15 or so. I started to
get concerned, but remembered that 4 or 5 adults would be with
The first adult meeting was held and I was the ONLY adult
from my site present (worry time). Back to the site and went
on a serch for the other adults. Found ONE OTHER LEADER, one
grandfather (NO LEADER EXPERIENCE) and 28 WEBELOS!!!!!!!!
Boy was I PISSED (excuse me, I'm sorry) lots of provisionals,
no equipment, except what I brought. So I talked to the
other adults and then to the boys, rules and regs type
stuff, and tried to make the best of it.
On to the week. For the most part the program was well run.
The staff didn't know what to do with 28 boys when we arrived
en mass at the bb and archery range and at handicraft, but
we managed. I am writing a letter to the camp director with
all kinds of nasty words regarding all of the extra boys and
the lack of adult help.
The boys, minus three, were wonderful. Bright, happy, etc.
The other three were the children from HELL.
dis-respectful, free with the hands, rude, and uncaring when
corrected. I am also writting letters to these boys parents and
letting them know that their child was deplorable at camp.
Any advice on how else to handle the problem?
thanks for listening.
PSS - my own boys, Robby and Craig are leaving for a week
at Forrestberg Scout Res., Monmouth County Council's camp
BOY I WISH I COULD GO, but I want them to have a week camping
