"Associate" as in talking, working, etc. is fine and dandy as long as
you're NOT doing your "associating" in a tent.
"Associate" as far as dating, etc. is NOT fine and dandy. Remember
Gregg, that the purpose of the outdoor event is to enjoy the outdoors.
If there's a female member of your Post that you're personally
interested in, you might want to approach her and ask to go camping
with her alone. Then, you can do whatever two consenting (and
careful!!) teens may do safely.
The entire intent of your "leader's" (Advisor's) statement is to
protect you, him and all of the other participants during the
encampment. There have *some* girls that have used situations to "see
what I can get from him", literally and figurately and as a result,
the BSA came up with this policy which he is holding everyone to.
So don't give him too much grief about it.

That's true. But someone observing two (or more)males in the private
confines with two females, on a camping trip and at night can *assume*
a lot, and once "stories start" about how he "allowed you to do"
whatever with them, they are hard to stop and can lead to the removal
of your adult leaders, the removal of your unit's charter and more.
What I've told my Explorers are that when we participate in an
overnight trip, think of it as an extended field trip. Field trips
have chaparones, they run according to the rules of the group, and
they last a certain period. Once the field trip is over, you are free
to do whatever you like with whomever you like, as long as its mutual.
Of course, this also means that you don't do this during OUR times
I've had several couples as part of my Explorer Post (and Ship). They
behaved, but yeah, I know that occassionally, they sneak in that kiss
or hold hands while "nobody" is looking. That's part too of
Exploring. But still, there's a line between personal dating and
participation with a group.
Talk, work and be with them. Just don't date during an Exploring
And they don't mix well.
