In reply to your question about Merit Badges: In our Troop I only count
nights of camping that take place at a scout outing (not necessary ours) I do
not count family camping, church campouts, or other camping such as 6th grade
camp. As far as hiking miles for the hiking merit badge (I am a counselor
for hiking and camping) I count any 10 mile hike the scout makes as long as
he writes it up. I do this because although we ofter several 10 mile hike a
year, a scout may not always be able to attend. As long as he fulfills the
requirements, as stated in the merit badge booklet, I will sign him off.
As for Scout uniform; it is my belief that the Scoutmaster sets the rules
governing troop programs and policy. If this scout and his father do not
like the policy in your troop, they are free to seek another.
