For what it is worth, I just came back from summer camp. On day 1, none
of our Scouts could get a fire going. Neither can I. It is amazing what two
straight weeks of rain will do to challenge one's fire building skills!
In terms of basic Scout Skills, I think many of us tend to think back to
"the good old days" when we were scouts. Looking back at my (copyright 1963)
Handbook, I found that I needed to spend one night camping, start one fire
with two matches, and cook one set of meals to make First Class. Perhaps
things got much tougher for the interval I was inactive, but it appears to me
that the requirements now are tougher than they were then (except for Morse
code, which was the First Class "killer" requirement at the time).
