Re: Scouting Night at school, we have our DE pay a visit to the school
on the day before the scheduled event (fliers are sent home to all
students a week prior to the Scouting Night). We also have the boys
wear their uniforms (well, their scout shirt at least) on the day of
the DE's visit. The DE usually shows a video to the kids during their
lunch period and then mingles with the students to talk up scouting
and the chance to join at Scouting Night.
Last year was the first year we tried this and we successfully recruited
two new Tiger Groups, two new Wolf dens, and a new first year Webelos
den (a total of 31 new scouts). In years past, we were lucky to get
enough boys for a single Tiger group.
We have a great relationship with our charter organization and the
school principal is a great supporter of scouting and encourages the
DE visits. The pack in turn provides a number of service functions
for the school and we make certain to recognize the charter rep and
the principal each year at the Blue and Gold Banquet.
The key to our success is trained adult leadership, an outgoing DE,
and support from the charter organization.
