I assume you mean troop camping on weekend campouts, not long term summer
camp where fees are set by the Council.
Before you can set these fees, you have to know what they are to pay for.
Possibilities include, camp-site fees (State Park or whatever), food,
transportation (gas reimbursement and tolls usually), admission charges.
In our troop, the campsite fees, etc. are paid out of troop funds raised
by the boys in our annual fundraiser. Gas/tolls reimbusement is offered
to all adults who drive, but few actually apply for it. Food is left up
to each patrol to set/collect and each patrol does it's own shopping and
cooking. Each patrol is also responsible for finding its own drivers,
usually among the adults of boys in that patrol. (In the rare instance
that a patrol can't find enough drivers, the SM will help coordinate
drivers/riders.) We require to see the written menu, shopping list, duty
roster, driver list for each patrol at the troop meeting 1 week before the
campout or those boys don't go.
Since each patrol sets its own food fee, there is no set fee although for
almost all patrols and campouts it is $10.00/boy. Parents with 2+ boys
get no special break since the fee only covers food. Adults are not
charged, based on their contribution of time/car/etc.
There are occasional exceptions to above. When we go to the amusement
park, we negotiate a group rate that everyone pays. On our annual Super
Campout (families invited, community kitchen) we charge a set fee per
person, adults included. That has been $25.00, but was raised this year
to $30.00 Special attractions (ferry boat rides, canoe trips, etc) are
always extra for this. (It's a 5 day trip.)
