Our council camp, Rock Hill Scout Reservation in Dingmans, PA, has a central
dining hall. Based on requests from some units, we have made patrol cooking
available as an option at some times over the past years.
In ancient times when I attended the camp as a youth (50's & 60's), we
started with all patrol cooking, moved to heater stacks issued by
quartermaster but served in the sites, and finally in the 70's built a dining
I personnally like both patrol cooking and dining hall and think that the
unit should decide. Perhaps some mix of both during a one or two week camp
stay would help the unit meet its training objectives and give the kids some
opportunity to gain the fellowship and relaxation of dining hall.
Let's give each unit what it needs and wants. MHO.
