I believe that you will find many camps still paying in the range of $40 a
week. In Illinois there is a state statue that sets the minimum wage salary
for summer camp staff and it says the prevailing minimum wage times 40 hours
less 25% for room and board provided to staff. this works out to a starting
salary of $132.50 per week. Even with the statue many councils in Illinois
do not pay the correct amount. In our case $132.50 per week is more than
one camper pays per week to attend camp.
We find that by paying this starting salary we get quality staff
applications and in fact use 15 year olds as CIT's because we are able to
hire older staff (many are college students).
