Before commenting on staff pay, I'd like to say a few words about camp
staff. The week after next, I get to go down to camp again as a volenteer
commissioner for a week and I can't wait. One of the reasons is that I get
to work with a bunch of guys and gals who can work a 10-15 hour day for six
days straight and still smile about it. Then they come back on Sunday and do
it again. Try finding that out here in the real world or in the average 16
Camp staff pay does not seem to vary much from camp to camp in our area.
First year junior staff members start in the $40-55 per week range.
Returing staff and most over 18 get in the $50-100 range. Senior staff and
directors go on up from there. Premiuns are sometime available for those
with special skills or those that were not located until just before camp.
Except for the cooks, almost all staff member up to the CDs could do a lot
better working elsewhere.
No one ever got rich working camp and darn few staff members ever get what
they are worth. CITs and volenteers like myself just get room and board,
but we get just as much fun as the paid staff.
