Problem noticed in posts...

While I have probably been guilty of doing something like this myself, until
one gets in the position of actually noticing the type of problems things
like this can cause, one tends to overlook the undesireable effects of what
A number of times over the last several weeks, I have noticed postings that
quote large pieces from other postings or digests. The list guidelines ask
that this not be done, and I can _totally_ agree. It causes me a problem
for the following reason.
My current Internet provider is the AzTeC Freenet at ASU, which is based on
the system developed and used by Case Weastern Reserve University for the
Cleveland Freenet. This system uses Kermit, XModem, YModem, and ZModem to
download files from the Aztec system to the user PCs.
Unfortunately, my home computer/modem/software combination (an old Compaq+
portable, with a 2400 baud modem) was excavated from the ruins of the Ark. It
has had to have the hard drive reformatted to remove Noah's inventory of
animals transported aboard the Ark. (After saving the information for
historical reasons, of course. ;) ) It does _not_ support any of the above
programs/protocols, leaving me with one other _known_ alternative to retreive
my mail from the system. Have it typed out, and log it to a disk file as it
is being displayed. I then use a standard DOS editor to read the digests.
This is grossly inefficient, and painfully timeconsuming, but better than
nothing. And it takes _some_ time to copy or download files that way. As
Aztec has a 60 minute time limit per login, 2-3 posts containing 100+ lines
of quoted material, at 2400 baud, tends to put a _real_ bite into the available
login time. ;)
Please _do_not_ send me any flames, or suggestions that I should upgrade my
system or find another Internet provider and not bother any of you with my
petty problems. When one is unemployed, even temporarily, nickles and dimes
become jewels to be guarded, not squandered on trivialities. (Such as un-
necessary Internet access. ;) ) My current financial situation will _not_
allow for the purchase of _any_ other computer system or Internet provider.
For that reason, such messages will fall on a deaf ear _and_ be cheerfully
If you have something of _value_ to contribute, such as _real_ advice, and/or
tidbits from the manual, concerning how this problem can be solved with my
current equipment, it _will_ be gladly accepted.
BTW, I have one other thing. I am also beginning to notice postings with
"sigs" that contain from 15 - 75 CRLFs between the end of the text and the
end of the post. One _does_ tend to sit up and take notice when 3 blank
screens suddenly go by. 8) These also tend to be associated with names
that _I_ do not recognize.
