Yes, the plant you are describing sounds like rhododendron. And the smaller
one with white flowers is Mountain Laurel. They bloom in the mountains
during June and July, depending on the altitude.
I have always been told to never burn rhododendron in a campfire as it gives
off a poisonous smoke. I have never burned it, so I don't know for sure :-)
I don't know the specifics. I do know it would probably not burn very
easily anyway, because it is an evergreen and green wood doesn't burn well.
You don't often find dead rhodo lying around the forest floor.
