Boy, does this subject ever stir up heated debate. I was at a recent
training meeting where I asked the DE 'Why do scouts quit'. He
replied that 'everyone knows why they eventually quit...sports and
Pressing him further I asked if he was aware of any research that BSA
had done to come up with that answer or if it just his personal
observation. The discussion went downhill from there. To make it
worse there was a room full of other leaders and they had the same
Now, if I were at the national level and had a 'product' in which I
firmly believed, I would want to know the real reasons why people
turned away from my 'product'.
The question I put out to you is the same. "Why do scouts quit?"
As a follow-on question...are you aware of any research that has been
done to find out why scouts leave. This is something that needs to be
asked and researched at the national level. This is especially
important as it should be done before any program changes are
undertaken. Too often people at decision making levels make program
changes without considering the needs or wants of the customers.
I know why my scouts leave/quit because I track them down and ask
them. But the reasons in my area may be different than your reasons.
Only by undertaking this at a national level can we find out broader
issues that affect our customers...the scouts.
I look forward to your opinions, facts, ideas, factoids, flames.
