The flags which we burned at our scout summer camp had been in use
for several years. They were frayed ( seams on end gone ) and
starting to rip.
Rather than put them in a storage closet some place to rot in the
dark, they were retired from use and then burned in a congressionally
approved scout ceremony.
My own troop has three old flags which haven't be used for at least
10 years. We are considering bringing them to summer camp for use in
the ceremonies. We have a summer camp of six one week sessions. at
the end of each session there is a closing ceremony. We feel it is
appropriate to provide flags for this service.
