I put together a presentation for a roundtable here in our district a few
months back on computers in scouting. It is in a PowerPoint (Microsoft for
IBM class machines, I did not catch what system you have access to) and
would be willing to make it available to you. I also have a few demo and
shareware versions of software programs. I could send as attachments, or if
you browse the WWW, I could put them into an area you could get to download.
There is also a large amount of slip-art (the BSA set) and other Scouting
areas on the WWW that might be of interest.
Anyway, in our troop we use TroopMaster (I am the Advancement Chairman, as
well as Chartered rep) and gather and enter information on the boys. I
gather information on addresses, parents, vehicles, medical conditions,
service dates, advancement, attendance on outings, etc. Very useful (about
30 boys total) and can get a variety of reports to help us plan our program,
let the boys know where they stand, assist reporting to the council office,
etc. Also good roster printouts.
We also use TroopLedger for finances (my wife is treasurer) and this works
well for managing troop funds, including individual scout accounts. It has
a portion for keeping track of equipment for net worth purposes (or insuring
I guess). Difficult to "catch up" with all the old equipment, but great for
keeping track of purchases of new stuff as it occurs. There are versions
for the Pack as well, with options to transfer scout data, but the Pack is
not using anything as yet.
Newsletters have not been too elaborate, as our secretary has limited
resources in computer and printing, but the Scoutmaster gets very creative
for campout plans including a liberal (sometimes too much) use of clip-art.
At the district level, several people get fairly fancy with fonts, art, etc.
Hope this helps........
