I would like to expand some opinions on Dan Browns comments!
YES< to keep your eagles in scouting, they must have a reason and
a purpose to stay. Leadership is a great challenge, but they
MUST get some training to be a confident leader. I have seen where
an eagle was thrust into a leadship role without enough real training.
He was shy, and hesitant, and lacked any confidence and almost quit.
Fortunatly he was active in the Order of the Arrow, and a vice
chief for elections. He attended local conclaves, and the NOAC.
He learned some great leadership skills from the seminars and
leadership training provided by the OA. He had already been through
a troop run JLT program both as a learner, and as staff. BUT, he
was not really preapred enough by the JLT programs. His JTL groups
we only 6 or 8 scouts. It is very different to be a SPL for 50 scouts
in 5 patrols, and be up front for a court of honor with over 100
people in a noisy crowed room, with parents, scouts and babys crying!
Yes, he too almost quit after Eagle! With the leadership skills
he learned as an OA member, he will continue. Maybe we need to
consider or to think about, talk about, an advanced JLT program?
Aimed more at the older scouts, SPL's and JASM's?
