A popular fund raiser here is Utah is service oriented. Since scouts tie in
so well with Duty to Country, many troops here is Utah provide a service
of posting an American Flag on Holidays in your front yard. The resident
donates a fee to the troop fund for the service. The flags are posted on
the morning of a major holiday, flag day, 4th of July, memorial day, etc.
Then it is taken down that evening.
The basic cost of the flag, pole and rebar to hold the pole is about $15.00
Depending on how many holidays your service supports (5-10), you
determine the donation amount. The first year you make about 50%.
Every year after that is pure profit to the troop.
1. It gives the resident an opportunity to be patriotic.
2. It really dresses up the neighborhood. Looks cool.
3. It reminds those driving around that day of the holiday and what it
4. It gives the scout more opportunities to celebrate patriotic holidays
with more meaning and a change to provide service to their community
Our troop just started with this project and it really seams like a win-win
for everyone involved. One last sales idea. Put and fly on the homes
that don't use your service. The flyer tells them what holiday it is & how
your troop is celebrating the holiday by providing the service to the
community. Then place a little note that says: By the way, if you want to
order our service, call........
I want to thank my friend, Lamar Kirby. He is a local scouter also and
gave me the details to make this work. Scouters helping Scouters. Too
