REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group rec.scouting.uk
Summary: UK Scouting discussion group
Proposed by: Simon Pearce (email@example.com)
This is a formal Request for Discussion (RFD) on the subject of creating
an unmoderated Usenet newsgroup, rec.scouting.uk .
This message initiates a discussion period to consider the creation of a
rec.scouting.uk newsgroup. Discussion will take place on the news.groups
Usenet newsgroup. All follow-up posts should be made to news.groups .
Since the formation of ScoutNet UK, the UKs only Scouting BBS, early
last year, hundreds of Scouters have come out of the woodwork, surprising
many of those involved with Scouting online in the UK. Still, every day
more and more Scouters are making themselves known on the Internet by
either contacting myself or the Public Relations Department at Scout HQ
There currently exists a rec.scouting newsgroup. This is 90% USA
orientated. For those in the know, US Scouting is VERY different to UK
Scouting. As much as it is nice to hear about Scouting around the world,
many UK Scouters feel it is too much wading through the numerous
messages which are totally irrelevant to them.
The reason we are creating a rec. newsgroup and not a uk. newsgroup is
that since announcing the proposal, many Europeans and Canadians (who's
Scouting programme is similar to that of the UK) have expressed concern
that their providers cannot get hold of uk. newsgroups. We feel it would
be nice to have some input from those who share our Scouting programme.
rec.scouting.uk would be for the general discussion of Scouting in the
UK. It would be an ideal forum for Scouters all over the country to swap
programme ideas, games, campfire stunts and to ask questions which they
are unable to find answers for locally. It would also offer the chance
for non-UK Scouters to see what's happening in the UK.
The complete official message - RFD, CFV and vote results will be posted
to the following newsgroups/lists/other groups:
rec.scouting, alt.scouting, scouts-l, ukscouts-l, scouting-europe,
explorer.net, Fidonet Scouting, Fidonet Scouter
Interested parties are encouraged to comment on this proposal in the
Usenet newsgroup news.groups . Please post your comments *only* in
news.groups . After 21 days, if there appears to be a strong consensus
in favour of this proposal as it is written here, a Cast For Votes (CFV)
will be posted, which will initiate the voting process. Please DO NOT
For further information on the newsgroup, you can e-mail
