To Sue Neilson
Congratulations to you and your son on making Eagle.
We just held my son's Eagle Ceremony 2 weeks ago so I know just how proud
you are of your son and his accomplishments. I remember the night of the
Board of Review. It was the first time that Matt asked me to Starch his
uniform. I didn't go to the church with him for the Review (at his
request) but waited at home. I also wondered at the time it took. And
even though you know that they probably would not deny the Eagle, you
remember all the "horror" stories you have heard about something coming up
at the last minute.
You will be so proud at the time of his ceremony! But don't down play your
part in this story! Yes, he did the project, all the planning and all the
work. But without encouragement from you, I am sure it would have never
been completed. The encouragement comes not just in the words you say, but
in the times you listened, small suggestions that may or may not have been
followed-up on, sometimes in the words you "did not" say. The
encouragement came in driving him all over the city and state to meetings
and camps that had nothing to do with his Eagle award but did much to feed
his soul and formed his personality (which ultimatly led to him having the
personal strenght to earn his award). The encouragement came in sewing on
all those blasted Cub Scout arrow points and finally teaching him how to
sew on his own patches and iron his own scout uniform.
So be proud of him and of yourself!
