Since a couple of others have posted some unusual weather
condition reports, I thought that I'd dredge up a couple, too.
My home council was Otetiana Council, Rochester, NY. Their
summer camp is Massawepie Scout Camps in Tupper Lake, NY.
The camp was about 60 miles west of Lake Placid (of Winter
My first summer on camp staff was 1968, the summer after my
junior year of High School (whoops, almost said college). At the
time Massawepie was a 2 week camp, so the last camping period was
late August. Well that last week, on Tuesday and Wednesday we had
SNOW on the ground with temperatures in the 30's [that's NOT celcius].
Those of us who did not have long pants had cold knees. Waterfront
staff was a bit chilled, but the water was warm compared to the air.
Another summer (1971), I was the Field Sports Director and was out at
the archery range when a hail storm hit. It was neat watching it come
up over the lake. Good thing I had a tent out there. At least we had
SOME protection from the marble size stones.
