My pack has also been faced with the economics of the sports program. We
determined that in order to award all the loops and pins that our boys
qualified for would cost the pack about 6-7 thousand dollars a year.
(thats not a typo). Remember that the boys can re-earn the awards. I
believe that this program was developed and intended for areas that did
not have organized sports as a way to allow boys in those areas to
experience sports and create some competition between units.
Our solution to this has been to recognise the boys and award them a
certificate that we made on the computer inserting the image of the
particular sport. The parents/boys may then go and purchase the loop or
pin on their own if they want it. Other packs in my area will award the
loop or pin once and recognize them as re-earning it.
