The Big Day went well

Sunday was the Big Day -- my son Matthew's Eagle Ceremony. It was a great
day! Everything went according to plans -- The ceremony was outside, so I
had been worrying for a month about the weather. We held the event at our
local Conservation Club which is also the site of Matt's project. With
cloudy skys in the morning, I was praying that the rain would hold off.
Well, God smiled on us because as soon as the ceremony was to begin, the
sky cleared, the sun was shining and there was a balmy breeze to keep the
bonfire smoke away from the audience.
The day was perfect. The ceremony was different from any other Eagle
Ceremony I had ever seen. Matt wrote much of it himself. He asked 2 adult
friends to perform a ceremonial smudge, which is like an indian invocation.
He wrote a short ceremony that included two of his OA friends in regalia.
As part of the ceremony they replaced his red scout scarf with his blue
Eagle scarf. Then they were cleansing the scarf and burning it. But of
course it would not burn which was the lesson -- even at the summit of the
mountain you cannot put aside your past, you must build upon it to soar
My daughter wore her Girl Scout uniform and looked great. We were able to
get all the chairs and sound system set up in time. We had a disaster the
day before with the cake but the baker came thru with another one. I even
forgot to get the burning permit, but the Scoutmaster remembered Saturday
afternoon and took care of that. I can hear Mike Walton chuckling because
he warned me last January to not forget the burning permit. I had a couple
of great Scout mom's that served and basically took care of the cake/punch
and stuff. I can't tell you how much everyone helped out!
For anyone planning a Eagle Ceremony, I suggest writing a good script that
contains staging instructions telling who moves where and when to do it.
We have a new Scoutmaster who had never done a Eagle Ceremony before -- of
course it was my first time too. The script told everyone one when they
were on and where to go. It worked great!
Everything was perfect and I would like to thank everyone on this list. I
have been listening and copying off all the "Eagle" messages for several
months. We copied down all the Eagle Tips and the Eagle Scripts from the
archives. This all helped a lot! Without all of you this day would not
have worked as well!
So -- Thanks !Thanks Thanks! THANKS!
