Wonderful(!), and I thought that I was the only one seeing this
problem. My most recent truncation happened to my Scouts-L digest on
the the 28th of April, and thanks to Chris Jacobi I was able to get a
uuencoded version to make it through and decoded it to look at.
I believe that most Un*x systems that use sendmail(8) are having
this problem. It is not simply "a period at the beginning of a line"
but *ONLY* a period at the beginning of a line. The sendmail
configuration is setup to interpret a line containing a "single period"
at the beginning as being the End Of Transmission. The remaining text,
the rest of the digest, is ignored. I have successfully received a few
digests that contain lines with one or more periods at the beginning,
but there is more text characters following the periods and sendmail
does not treat that as the termination line. However, it would be wise
to not have any periods at the beginning of the lines just to be safe.
It is very frustrating to have this happen, I can not even request
the archives for the month from the list server. That "pesky" period
is in there, and I get only the messages that are before the period but
nothing after it, and I already have those parts :-(.
The following questions show my lack of LISTSERV savvy. Is there a
way to request files, ie the monthly archives, via e-mail from the list
server, in a compressed/uuencoded format ? This way the messages are
in a different format and the "period" is hidden. Is there a way to
"pre"-filter the postings to place anything, ie a ">", in front of the
period before the mail is sent out from the listserver ?
For the SCOUTS-L postings, are they archived on a FTP site
somewhere ? I can get e-mail/ftp access that also compresses and
uuencodes the files. The two sites I know of, pluto.utdallas.edu and
ftp.us.net do not carry the archives.
I hope that this "pesky" period problem continues to be infrequent.
I know that for those of us who use digest mode it is a real bummer, I
not only loose the rest of that particular mail message but I loose the
rest of the *days* messages. Is there a kind sole out there who might be
willing to uuencode the occasional digest for those of use who are
sendmail challenged :-).
