I just wanted to put in a couple of comments about two threads which have
been going hot and heavy lately.
Re: LDS Scouting - The biggest problem I have with the LDS program is the
system of "calling" leaders. It very often results in good leaders but when
poor choices are made the results seem to be worse than among regular
troops. The one fatal outing I know of this area was with an LDS scout
troop who did everything wrong. The only other near fatal outing I have
heard of also involved an LDS unit where the leaders exercised such poor
judgement that they almost lost the troop to hypothermia when they got
caught by a late snowstorm. I don't know if it is fact or perception but
the common feeling I have heard expressed is that most of the life
threatening problems with troops in our council have been with LDS units.
On the other hand, I went through Scoutmaster Fundamentals with several LDS
leaders who made the statement that their bishop considered training so
important that if they needed dispensation to attend Sunday training he
would grant it.
Re: Uniforming - I attended a meeting for summer camp information last
night. There were about 2 or 3 dozen scouters there in uniform. Less than
a quarter of them (I was one) were in full uniform. Most of the ones in
full uniform were Council staff and volunteers. About a quarter of the
group were from other councils and none of them were in full uniform.
Just some ramblings.
