My name is Dean Hayes. My oldest son crossed over from Webelos
to Boy Scouts last night. My youngest son is in a Tiger den
which will become a Wolf Den at the next pack meeting (My wife is
the den leader).
Having once been a scout myself and not being on of those parents
who can drop off their child and come back later, I have also
signed on as an Assistant Scoutmaster and Merit Badge Counselor
(Cycling, Computers). Prior to this, I volunteered to help my
son's Cub Scout Pack and Den on a regular bases. I just didn't
hold an official position with the pack.
My first impressions. Scouting has changed a lot since 1975, ie:
- Rank requirements.
- Fear of child abuse law-suits
It looks like the main message is still the same.
At this point, I am looking for as much information as I can to
help me the best that I can. I've been browsing the news group
rec.scouts for a while and have basically become fed up with it's
very low signal/noise ratio and flame wars. I'm hoping that the
subscribers to this list are more mature.
Locally, I am looking into training opportunities. As a
minimum, I plan on taking Scoutmaster's Fundamentals when I find
out when/where it is offered.
