I'm trying to reconstruct a story for this Friday's pack meeting (also
our AoL ceremony).
I remember this story being told by a scouter and him saying it was told
to him on his first scout campout as a boy. I have recostructed the
story to my satisfaction, but need help recostructing three morals at the
Long time ago, there was no night. Everyone gets alongh, shares what
they have, .... along comes a drought followed by greed, theft, even
murder. ... God gets angry and throws a blanket over the earth. ...
Everyone scared & doesn't know what to do ... Along comes a very small
bird who flies repeatedly at the blanket and pokes holes in it letting in
a small pinpoint of light each time ... people notice this and start to
help the bird, giving it water and bringing out small pieces of their own
food. They start to chear the bird as a group and urge it onward ...
God sees this and sees that the people have learned. He removes the
blanket, but admonishes them to remember their past. To that end, he
will leave the blanket (with the bird's holes in it) on the earth for
half of each day. and tells them [ and here's where I need your help ]
that 1) the people need to help one another and not be greedy or selfish,
and 2) that the least of them (the bird) can make a difference.
[Was there a third "moral"?]
Also, I remember somewhere that Lord Baden-Powel had a similar story
regarding people leaving their mark on this world (as stars) and to look
at the stars on their way home and ponder if they had done their best
that day. Anyone have this story?
