Looking for an alternative to Philmont (reverent bow) for a cavalcade
experience in a mountain wilderness? Check out the "Black Range
Cavalcade" offered by Yucca Council out of El Paso, Texas (yes, Texas).
It involves either a 3 or 5 day trek into the Aldo Leopold Wilderness
area which includes a portion of the continental divide. I have not had
the opportunity (sigh) to go on one of the treks myself, but EVERYONE
that has cannot say enough about the great experience they had. I am
trying to remember the prices from memory, but I seem to remember $145
and $245 for the costs the the two trek lengths. Each group is
accompanied by not only wranglerS, but by the owner of the outfit that is
contracted by the council to put on the program (he is a long time
scouter, silver beaver, etc.). If anyone is interested in more
information about this high adventure opportunity in _southern_ New
Mexico, I will be more than happy to provide it either peronally or to
the list, if the requests justify it.
