We let the boys decide what their patrols will be. If one goal of
patrols is to present a natural grouping of boys, they can do it better
than I can. Not all patrols are the same size, some are as small as 4 or
as large as 10. The patrols stay fairly constant from year to year.
In patrol competition, we usually balance our point system with
participation. The older Scouts -might- have an advantage in some skill
areas, but the gung-ho new Scouts go to every event and meeting and rack
up points over the older boys with jobs and girlfriends. It balances out.
What is the ideal patrol situation? I don't know. I'm still working on
that question and probably will for quite awhile.
