A while back I posted concerning new Webelos and mentioned a program
called "Jumping in January". Someone asked for more information on that
program. I am a little late in my reply, but I had to find the exact
information because I wanted to be as accurate as possible.

SAMPLE PRESS RELEASE
A sample press release for local newspaper about the new Webelos joining
the troop. Just fill in the blanks and include a photo if desired.
That's the kit.
Following is a brief description of the actual program.
Webelos, Leaders, and parents are invited to a special troop meeting and
Camp Promotion. Sample outline of meeting included in kit.
Webelos den included in Troop meeting opening ceremony. The rest of
their meeting is held separately. Support provided to Webelos meeting by
DC and other older Scout.
Webelos den is included in opening ceremony and game. <not Boy Scouts
against Webelos however> Rest of the meeting separate. DC and another
older Scout help provide support.
Webelos den now ALWAYS included in opening ceremony and game. SPL and
PLs join Webelos den meeting to help them plan for upcoming Webelos/Troop
Weekend between weeks four and five. Include Webelos, their dads in
activities focusing on basic camping and outdoor skills. <It's cold up here in Illinois in February, often time a cabin is recommended>
Continuation of previous weeks. Webelos working on AOL requirements with
help of DC and older Scout. Rotate the older Scout each week if possible
so the Webelos get to know the older boys one at a time.
(Opening & Game) Continuation of previous weeks.
(Opening & Game) Continuation of previous weeks.
(Opening & Game) PL's and Troop Guide assigned for future new Scout
patrol. Current PLs in troop meet with Webelos Den to teach them Square
Knot (joining knot).
(Opening & Game) DC and Troop Guide meet with Webelos Den to plan
upcoming Webelos Graduation Ceremony. Collect completed Boy Scout
Pack Meeting - Webelos Graduation into Troop. Troop leadership and
Scouts on hand to welcome new Scouts. Send out news release on
graduation. Request recognition ribbon.
Of there may be some variations made to accomodate the schedules of the
pack and troop. It is suggested that this schedule be followed as
closely as possible. Assuming you started the second full week of
January, the Webelos would be successfully transitioned into the troop by
mid-March. It is recommended to adjust the dates of the program to
coincide with the graduation being held at the Pack's Blue and Gold banquet.
The purpose of the program is to slowly aclimate the Webelos to your
troop and its meeting place. During this process the WEbelos are still
conducting their own meeting and activities. They are joining you only
for an opening and a game. They look forward to the time when they can
be fully involved in the entire meeting. They already have come to know
many of the older Scouts, the PLs, the DC and the Troop Guide. They feel
they are a part of the troop by the time they join and become Boy Scouts.
The old way of a Webelos den selecting a troop and then diving in can
scare some of the boys off, with this program they ease into things
slowly hopefully causing less anxiety on the part of boys and parents
alike, thus improving the retention of the newly joined Scouts.
That's the "Jumping in January" program in a nutshell.
