Here in California, the day a child graduates from kindergarten, he or she
"is promoted to the first grade". It may sound like hairsplitting, but it is
not. The child is then legally a first grade student, even though he or she
is still about three months away from attending the first day of class in
the fall semester. Many children around here like to attend summer school
for some of the fun educational programs offered, so this is not just a
nontrivial nitpick. For example, a kindergartner who graduates from
kindergarten on or about the 15th of June may start attending summer school
as a first grader a week later.
Given this situation, do I then tell the parents that their child may not
join the Tiger Cubs until fall because he is not in first grade? I think not.
The same situation, of course, applies to the boys who graduate from first
grade and want to cross over to become Wolves, etc.
I would value any further insight into this matter that you can provide.
