Well, April 10 has come and gone. I promised to post the results of my
request to poll the members of your troops as to their opinion about their
troops going co-ed.
I received a total of 2 responses directly. Thanks Wendy and Hugh. I also
had a nice extended correspondence with Norman. And now the results:
Total number of troops polled: 0
Total number of Scouts polled: 1
Total number of responses in favor of Co-ed: 2 (his girl friend was also
Hugh said he had been polling Scouts informally for some time and had received
an overwhelming negative response.
Norman has had experience in the UK, Canada and the US. His experience in a
co-ed environment was overwhelmingly positive.
My conclusion: We (as adults in Scouting) may not be listening to the boys
on this issue. It certainly seems the feelings I've read on the list
have little to do with the desires of current Scouts. I'm not so sure
on an issue like this a young man of Scout age has the perspective to make
the best decision anyway. Personally I think the lack of responses to my
original question tells as much as the (mostly) cogent discussion it
generated on the list. Are we as leaders too willing to advance our personal
