Re: New Scout patrols and advancement

This is mainly in response to Erik Ashby's contribution about creating
patrols based on rank.
In our troop, we have both patrols (regular and new-scout) and Advancement
Groups. The advancement groups are only used during troop meetings when we
work on advancement. At the beginning of each season, the new scouts are
usually with their patrol for advancement, but as they progress they move
on to the appropriate advancement group (tenderfoot, second class, or first
class). Each group has guides and instructors assigned to it to do the
teaching, and adult leaders to watch over.
I worry about assigning permanent patrols based on rank, because first of
all they wouldn't be permanent, and also boys might feel bad about being
"left behind" if they don't advance quickly enough. I think that might
take some of the fun out of scouting and contribute to drop-outs.
