Breaking in new boots

I saw a question about breaking in new boots. Here's what I did:
Last year, i bought a new pair of Raichle Montagna's from REI in
Albuquerque, NM. I bought these in April, for a Philmont trek in July.
Obviously, I had my work cut out for me in breaking these in. They are
ALL LEATHER. Except the sole...
Anyway, I treated these boots with Sno Seal. Heavily. This was
to waterproof the boots, but I found it softened up the leather quite well.
I never got the leather wet, as I didn't want the hassle of trying to dry
them without using any heat, and also not getting them mildewed.
So, anyway, after I treated the boots, I simply wore them for the next
four months. Any time I wasn't in uniform (Air Force, I mean!), i wore the
Raichle's. Come 721 (Oops, I mean July 21st), the boots were ready to go.
The only problem I had with them at Philmont was from trying to wea
(wear) the recommended two pair of socks with my boots. I promptly got a
blister on the ball of my foot. I have never been able to wear two pair
of socks -- some people are like that, I guess.
The socks I now wear with these boots are Thorlo hiking socks. I wear
them with no other socks at all. They work fine.
I would like to try the Thorlo trekking socks, but I just haven't
got around to trying them. Anybody have experience with these?
